First, it's fun. How many opportunities do we have to dress in costume, eat, drink
and dance with friends in an appropriately ghost-haunted castle?
Second, for issues from protecting the Supreme Court and the environment to stopping the war in Iraq and restoring medical care to children and the working poor, it's vital that Democrats sweep the 2008 elections. In Missouri, Greene County and the rest of southwest Missouri are the keys to that success. In 2006 we elected Claire McCaskill by improving her Greene County Democratic turnout from 37% to almost 43%. According to Claire, she couldn't have achieved that victory without the organizational support of Greene County Democrats. Maintaining that organizational structure requires money, and I can't think of a more enjoyable way to help local Democrats raise those funds. So invite your friends and join us on October 27 at the Pythian Castle for the third annual Masquerade Ball. You will have a ball, and you will help us elect Democrats in 2008. When Fox News aired a report in January claiming that Sen. Barack Obama had been educated at a radical Muslim madrassa, his campaign beat the story back -- hard -- with the candidate himself going on television to call it "ludicrous" and a "smear." For the last few years, the baseball field at Grant Beach Park was not what you would call great. The infield was overgrown with grass, and the entire field had weeds. Even the bleachers that once housed onlookers had been removed. Now, thanks to a community wide effort and the Springfield/Greene County Park Board, the field at the park is the envy of a lot of people. "It just looks great," Anita Kuhns, vice president of the Grant Beach Neighborhood Association said. "Seeing the new field was quite a site after seeing all the grass for so many years. Now there is actual dirt, lines, bases, benches, and dugouts. It is really a wonderful site." The new field at Grant Beach Park was unveiled during the Northwest Springfield Neighborhood Softball Blowout Bonanza on September 30. The event was sponsored by the Community Free Press, St. John's Clinic-West Kearney, the Parks Department, Real People for Real Change, Z106.7, and the Grant Beach Neighborhood Association. It was organized by two people from the community who saw a need for a new field and decided to do something about it. "I grew up playing at the park. Earlier this summer I was out there hitting some baseballs around and noticed a big difference in the field condition," Derek White said. "As I played, an idea sparked: why shouldn't kids today get to play on a field like I got to?" (763 words in story) Full Story By Press, Section News
From the Mail Bag: Letter from a Springfield Resident
I am so pissed. My healthcare lady just left. Ellen is a Christian Like I. We live not push it. She told me yesterday the agency she works with had what is refer to in-house meeting. The meeting was held at Broadway Baptist on Republic Road. She said she could not believe it. They were pushing Matt Blunt. This is a business meeting, which I believe is against the law. She said they sang religious songs and prayed at the end. She said she had a lady seated next to her and was laughing that this was ending up being a business/religious meeting. If I did not like my girl I would change agencies. This the same agency that one of the owners and 2 supervisors visited me last Jan. They ask would I like to meet Gov. Blunt. I said HELL no. They were surprised that I did not want to meet the Governor. (535 words in story) Full Story By Press, Section News

Hot off the presses from MSNBC:
The voter's "protests to the contrary" are exactly right. The AFL-CIO does not support the bill expanding NAFTA into Peru, and the much-trumpeted labor/environmental standards leave enforcement up to the Bush administration, rather than empowering third parties to enforce them (like corporations have the power to enforce investor rights provisions in these same trade agreements). Leaving enforcement to the Bush administration - or any administration - is the biggest loophole possible. It is precisely why corporate lobbyists have bragged to reporters that the standards are not enforceable. By Press, Section Events
Howard Dean and the DNC are promoting November 3rd as a "One Year Out" Democratic outreach day with house parties and canvasses.
The Jay Nixon Campaign is teaming up with these events to help him and local
Democrats get elected one year from now. They may be able to supply walk lists for One Year Out canvass efforts in your neck of the
Missouri woods. Here for example, is the event I have set up in
