From the Mail Bag: Why bring friends to Masquerade Ball?

Great Ideas

By Press, Section Events
Posted on Tue Oct 16, 2007 at 07:38:58 AM EST

First, it's fun. How many opportunities do we have to dress in costume, eat, drink and dance with friends in an appropriately ghost-haunted castle?

Second, for issues from protecting the Supreme Court and the environment to stopping the war in Iraq and restoring medical care to children and the working poor, it's vital that Democrats sweep the 2008 elections. In Missouri, Greene County and the rest of southwest Missouri are the keys to that success.

In 2006 we elected Claire McCaskill by improving her Greene County Democratic turnout from 37% to almost 43%. According to Claire, she couldn't have achieved that victory without the organizational support of Greene County Democrats.  Maintaining that organizational structure requires money, and I can't think of a more enjoyable way to help local Democrats raise those funds.

So invite your friends and join us on October 27 at the Pythian Castle for the third annual Masquerade Ball. You will have a ball, and you will help us elect Democrats in 2008.

Politico - Untraceable e-mails spread Obama rumor

Scoop

By Press, Section News
Posted on Sun Oct 14, 2007 at 09:36:41 AM EST

By: Ben Smith and Jonathan Martin, Politico

When Fox News aired a report in January claiming that Sen. Barack Obama had been educated at a radical Muslim madrassa, his campaign beat the story back -- hard -- with the candidate himself going on television to call it "ludicrous" and a "smear."

And his aggressive defense worked, or so it seemed at the time: The notion that Obama has secret Muslim roots faded from the mainstream media, and even from most conservative blogs and magazines.

But rather than vanish, the whispered smear campaign appears to have gone underground, and in its purest form: Obama himself, according to a pair of widely circulated anonymous e-mails, is a Muslim.

"Barack Hussein Obama has joined the United Church of Christ in an attempt to downplay his Muslim background," warns an e-mail titled "Who Is Barack Obama," that was circulating in South Carolina political circles this summer and sent to Politico by a South Carolina Democrat.

"The Muslims have said they plan on destroying the U.S. from the inside out; what better way to start than at the highest level?"

"Please forward to everyone you know," it ended.

Community Free Press - New Field Enlivens Northside Park

Scoop

By Press, Section News
Posted on Sun Oct 14, 2007 at 09:13:04 AM EST

by Mert Seaton, Community Free Press

For the last few years, the baseball field at Grant Beach Park was not what you would call great. The infield was overgrown with grass, and the entire field had weeds. Even the bleachers that once housed onlookers had been removed.

Now, thanks to a community wide effort and the Springfield/Greene County Park Board, the field at the park is the envy of a lot of people.

"It just looks great," Anita Kuhns, vice president of the Grant Beach Neighborhood Association said. "Seeing the new field was quite a site after seeing all the grass for so many years. Now there is actual dirt, lines, bases, benches, and dugouts. It is really a wonderful site."

The new field at Grant Beach Park was unveiled during the Northwest Springfield Neighborhood Softball Blowout Bonanza on September 30. The event was sponsored by the Community Free Press, St. John's Clinic-West Kearney, the Parks Department, Real People for Real Change, Z106.7, and the Grant Beach Neighborhood Association. It was organized by two people from the community who saw a need for a new field and decided to do something about it.

"I grew up playing at the park. Earlier this summer I was out there hitting some baseballs around and noticed a big difference in the field condition," Derek White said. "As I played, an idea sparked: why shouldn't kids today get to play on a field like I got to?"

Integrity Healthcare - Politics, Religion, and Business as Usual

From the Mail Bag: Letter from a Springfield Resident

I am so pissed. My healthcare lady just left.

Ellen is a Christian Like I. We live not push it.

She told me yesterday the agency she works with had what is refer to in-house meeting. The meeting was held at Broadway Baptist on Republic Road.

She said she could not believe it. They were pushing Matt Blunt. This is a business meeting, which I believe is against the law.

She said they sang religious songs and prayed at the end. She said she had a lady seated next to her and was laughing that this was ending up being a business/religious meeting.

If I did not like my girl I would change agencies.

This the same agency that one of the owners and 2 supervisors visited me last Jan. They ask would I like to meet Gov. Blunt. I said HELL no. They were surprised that I did not want to meet the Governor.

BREAKING: Obama Says He Will Vote for NAFTA Expansion

Scoop

By Press, Section News
Posted on Fri Oct 12, 2007 at 01:54:08 PM EST

by David Sirota, Sirotablog

Hot off the presses from MSNBC:

"Obama said he would vote for a Peruvian trade agreement next week, in response to a question from a man in Londonderry, NH who called NAFTA and CAFTA a disaster for American workers. He said he supported the trade agreement with Peru because it contained the labor and environmental standards sought by groups like the AFL-CIO, despite the voter's protests to the contrary. He also affirmed his support for free trade."

The voter's "protests to the contrary" are exactly right. The AFL-CIO does not support the bill expanding NAFTA into Peru, and the much-trumpeted labor/environmental standards leave enforcement up to the Bush administration, rather than empowering third parties to enforce them (like corporations have the power to enforce investor rights provisions in these same trade agreements). Leaving enforcement to the Bush administration - or any administration - is the biggest loophole possible. It is precisely why corporate lobbyists have bragged to reporters that the standards are not enforceable.

Obama is the first presidential candidate to officially declare his/her support for the NAFTA expansion moving through the Congress. His announcement is not necessarily surprising, considering he was the keynote speaker at the launch of the Hamilton Project - a Wall Street front group working to drive a wedge between Democrats and organized labor on globalization issues. His announcement comes just days after a Wall Street Journal poll found strong bipartisan opposition to lobbyist-written NAFTA-style trade policies.

Trade has been known to be a huge issue in Iowa (remember Dick Gephardt in 1988), so this announcement could very well ripple through the 2008 primary.

Canvassing November 3rd for DNC and MO Democrats

Great Ideas

By Press, Section Events
Posted on Fri Oct 12, 2007 at 12:19:43 PM EST

Howard Dean and the DNC are promoting November 3rd as a "One Year Out" Democratic outreach day with house parties and canvasses.

The Jay Nixon Campaign is teaming up with these events to help him and local Democrats get elected one year from now. They may be able to supply walk lists for One Year Out canvass efforts in your neck of the Missouri woods. Here for example, is the event I have set up in Fulton:

And...here is the DNC intro page to set up an event wherever you are.

Brandon Costerison is handling arrangements with the Nixon Campaign. Get in touch with Brandon to discuss the possibility of campaign materials for your canvass as well as walk lists.

There will be a conference call with Jay at 10:30 on the morning of the canvass...so they are suggesting having people gather at 10:00, canvass at 11:00, take a break for lunch and have more canvassing in the afternoon.

Time to dust off those walkin shoes, folks.

This is an example of Gov Dean's 50 State Strategy...a winning strategy for Democrats all over the Country!

Thanks,

Bill Monroe

DC for Democracy's Primary Candidate vetting: Check out candidate responses and positions

Scoop

By Press, Section News
Posted on Mon Oct 08, 2007 at 04:38:17 AM EST

DC for Democracy has done a wonderful job of outlining candidate stated positions and voting histories on a number of issues, and they have sent a great questionnaire to all the Democratic Candidates.

Thus far Edwards, Obama and Gravel have responded to the request for responses sent to all the candidates in July.

See DC for Democracy's 2008 Primary Page, for the result of their endorsement vote and all the background info.

DfMO does not plan to endorse in the Primary Presidential election, but if we were, the vetting work has been done by the good Dean Democrats in DC. The fact sheets on the issues are great, and I happen to agree with their choice for President , which makes it all the better!

Thank you Keshini and all of you at DC for Democracy.

If you too are inspired by their work, one way to thank them would be to do what you can to help move forward the bill for DC voting rights:

Two reporters are seeking veterans and family members to interview about their problems dealing with military and VA healthcare.

If you want to volunteer in the next few days, please contact the reporter directly. Please limit your contact to one reporter. Please remember that you may be asked to document your honorable wartime military service (such as your DD214), or you may be asked very personal questions that may appear on TV or in a newspaper.
