Paul McMasters
Discussing
"Secrecy versus Security: Can Democracy Function in the Dark?"
Recently retired from The Freedom Forum, McMasters is one of the nation's leading authorities on First Amendment and freedom-of-information issues. In this address, he will deal with governmental information policies, particularly at the federal level, that have turned increasingly secretive and manipulative by examining a number of open government issues in the news .In a conversation with the audience afterward he will explore whether excessive secrecy helps or harms national security.
McMasters began his journalism career at the News-Leader in 1960 and has been presented with the Society of Professional Journalists' highest honor, the Wells Key. He became executive director of the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, where he worked to educate and inform about First Amendment issues that arise in Congress, the courts, the media, and other areas of public life. He is a charter member of the National Freedom of Information Act Hall of Fame and has been awarded The John Peter and Anna Catherine Zenger First Amendment Award.

Call For Impeachment Protest, Satuday, Oct. 27
By Press, Section News
Posted on Wed Oct 24, 2007 at 08:59:00 AM EST
To Members & Friends of the Peace Network of the Ozarks,
As we all know, the President and Vice President have intentionally, and continuously, ignored their oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution. There is very substantial evidence they have manufactured intelligence to offer outright lies to the American people and Congress. They continue to avoid the right thing to do with numerous "signing statements" against the interest of America. They have manufactured their own definition of torture, and manipulate the provisions of the Geneva Convention in an undue manner against the interest of our soldiers in the field. They have also issu ed secret legal edicts that supposedly protects them against prosecution for violating the laws of the United States. They refuse to release emails and documentation to allow investigations to begin. They perform immoral acts in utter secrecy out of the eye of Americans and the Congress. They continue to promote the contrived Iraq War for the sake of profit and oil, and they are beating an additional war drum to attack Iran with no correct diplomatic action whatsoever. Some of us believe their literal fevered thought processes are beyond any logical explanation, and sanity.
There is still a long way to go until the end of the president's term, over a year. What will they do next? How many lives will be lost, innocents as well as American soldiers, airmen, and sailors? Will the middle east become a catastrophic wasteland with nuclear radiation burning the land and its people forever after? How much more depleted uranium will be inserted to water systems causing birth defects and disease, and suffering for decades to come? How many international friends have we lost already in the continuing poor leadership? How many years will it take the world, and America, to recover from potential catastrophe, and regain moral leadership in the world to positively influence the world. How soon can we replace the immoral leaders who now openly talk about WWIII?
Have you had enough?
This is a call for an Impeachment Protest to align with many other peace organizations and reasonable minded individuals all across the country on Oct. 27. Please note the detail below.

The Hill - Sen. Clinton digs deep into D.C. donor pockets
By Press, Section News
Posted on Mon Oct 22, 2007 at 09:03:52 AM EST
By Alexander Bolton, The Hill
New fundraising data shows that Beltway insiders who had been on the fence are flocking to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's (D-N.Y.) presidential campaign as she has maintained her strong lead in the polls, performed well in debates and made few mistakes.
Clinton raised $1 million from Washington, D.C. donors during the third quarter of 2007, far more than any other presidential candidate and about twice as much as her chief rival, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), according to data compiled by the Federal Election Commission (FEC).
Clinton has seen her fundraising numbers in D.C. remain steady over the last few months, while Obama's have dropped precipitously, an indication that the inside-the-Beltway political community is gravitating toward Clinton. Overall, D.C. donors gave a third less to presidential candidates in the third quarter.
Clinton's fundraising in D.C. has also mirrored her climb in the polls.
"It's clear the money was tracking with Clinton's polls, giving credence to the notion that people were waiting for someone to take the lead," said Sheila Krumholz, executive director of the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan organization that monitors campaign fundraising.
Krumholz said that Clinton raised 7 percent of her D.C. money in July, 20 percent in August, and 73 percent in September.
"There are a huge number of donors who simply want to bet on the winner," she said.

The Military Commissions Act. Warrantless wiretapping. Shredding of Habeas Corpus. Torture. Extraordinary Rendition. Secret Prisons.
No more.
Senator Dodd has decided to place a "hold" on the latest FISA bill that would have included retroactive immunity telecommunications companies that enabled the President's assault on the Constitution by providing personal information on their customers without judicial authorization.
Not now. Not again. And when he is elected President, Restoring the Constitution is what he will do in his FIRST HOUR in the Oval Office.
Please indicate your support for Senator Dodd's hold by signing on and consider sharing your thoughts in the comment section.
