Doug Harpool: Politicians should explain selves

Letter to the Editor, News-Leader

Efforts by some political candidates to convince the State Ethics Commission to allow them to keep political contributions which exceed limits enacted by voters are shameful. Unfortunately, the State Ethics Commission's secret handling of the issue hasn't been much better. The commission should immediately schedule a public hearing for any candidate who requests to keep the excess contributions. These politicians should be required to personally and publicly explain why they should be allowed to keep these contributions.

The governor, who is yet to return excess contributions, should be given the first opportunity to personally explain why he needs to keep the $100,000 out-of-state contributions he received. He should publicly explain why his re-election effort is dependent on contributions which exceed the limits approved by voters. After these public hearings, the Ethics Commission should unanimously vote to require all candidates from every party affiliation to live within the limits voters established and refund excess contributions with interest. Voters should then vote against every candidate, regardless of party affiliation, who refused to voluntarily refund excess contributions.

Why John Edwards Is The Most Electable Democrat

by Michael 4 Edwards, Daily Kos

I had to write and post this in a hurry on my way out the door, but the substance is there for those who want to read it.

As many of you already know, earlier this morning Clinton loyalist Doug Schoen admitted that John Edwards is the most electable Democrat.

I am going to use this opportunity to do two things.

1. Provide a link to the overwhelming evidence that John Edwards is the most electable Democrat because the compilation is being constantly updated.

2. Debunk the "No New York" theory that some Clinton supporters are trying to advance. If you are going to try to cite RCP averages, please click on the link and read the review first. The "No New York" theory is basically that Clinton will keep New York blue and Edwards cannot Vs. Giuliani. The New York theory is based on Edwards losing the state by 1% to Giuliani in the latest Survey USA poll of that state. This theory is absurd. But it should be dealt with.

I should also update the current Survey USA recap... Out of 51 match-ups so far...

Edwards outperforms Clinton 35 times. Clinton outperforms Edwards 15 times. They tie once.

Edwards outperforms Obama 46 times. Obama outperforms Edwards 4 times. They tie once.

Schoolcraft's Hand Felt in Willard - Aldermen resign amid disputes

Outgoing officials cite friction with mayor of Willard.

by John Taylor, News-Leader

Two of Willard's four aldermen resigned this week after months of conflict with the city's mayor, and the city administrator is expected to quit soon as well.
In a letter of resignation submitted Monday, former Alderman Charles Whitehead said he was leaving "due to personal reasons." Former Alderman Bill Caplinger's letter, also submitted Monday, said he was resigning because of "personal commitments."

In interviews Thursday, however, both men gave additional reasons.

"I don't like the direction everything is going," said Whitehead. "I don't want to be a party to it, and I don't have to."

Whitehead, 66, said he only got into politics because he was retired and had the time to do it. His second term was to expire in April.

"I don't want anything to sound like sour grapes," he said. "I don't have any animosity toward anybody."

Caplinger, 36, a sales representative in the construction industry, also said he did not want his remarks to sound like "sour grapes."

He and Mayor Jamie Schoolcraft have disagreed on numerous issues since the 31-year-old paramedic was elected in April, Caplinger said.

The final straw, he said, was when Schoolcraft told the board of aldermen Monday that he wanted to appoint his fellow volunteer firefighter Stacy Winters as emergency management director, a paid position.
